⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — 5 out of 5 Paws — Guest Review by Oakley
Oakley here. I need to tell you about a toy that made me look, and I quote, “absolutely unhinged” according to my humans. I prefer the term “deeply engaged.” The toy in question is the Outward Hound Hide-A-Squirrel Puzzle Toy, and it is both the most frustrating and most satisfying thing I have ever interacted with.
Scout looked at it, pulled one squirrel out in about four seconds, and wandered off. This is why Scout is not a puzzle person. I, however, am very much a puzzle person.
What Is It?
It’s a plush log with holes in the top, and inside those holes live little squeaky squirrels. Your job is to find the squirrels and remove them from the log. That’s it. That’s the game. I know what you’re thinking. That sounds too simple. And yet. AND YET.
The Hunt
The first squirrel came out easily enough. I found the tail, I pulled, and out it came with a satisfying squeak. I was pleased. Then I noticed there were more. I could smell them in the log. I could hear them if I squeezed the log just right. This was not a toy. This was a mission.
I spent twenty minutes extracting all the squirrels. I tried different angles. I used my paws. I used my nose. I flipped the log over. My humans watched the whole thing and kept saying “good girl” which I appreciated but also found distracting. I was working. Once I had all the squirrels out, my humans put them back. We did it again. Three times. I was not tired of it.
Mental Stimulation Is Real
Here’s what I want to say to every human who thinks their dog just needs more walks: your dog also needs mental exercise. Running is great. But working your brain is a different kind of tired, and it’s a good kind. After my Hide-A-Squirrel sessions I am calm, content, and ready for a very dignified nap. My humans call this “the good tired.” They are correct.
Oakley’s Verdict
- ✅ Squeaky squirrels — deeply satisfying to find and extract
- ✅ Multiple squirrels included — more to find, more to win
- ✅ Available in different sizes — more squirrels means more challenge
- ✅ Great mental stimulation for smart, curious dogs
- ✅ Soft plush — gentle on teeth
- ✅ Humans can reset it — replayable game
- ⚠️ Not for aggressive chewers who will destroy the squirrels (Scout)
- ⚠️ Supervise to prevent swallowing small pieces
- ⚠️ Scout will steal your squirrels if you’re not paying attention
The Outward Hound Hide-A-Squirrel is the perfect toy for dogs who like to think. Scout pulled one squirrel out and called it done. I extracted all of them methodically and demanded a second round. We are simply different kinds of dogs.
5 out of 5 paws. The squirrels never stood a chance.
